Silica Gel is a type of desiccant mainly used for adsorbing and controlling moisture or humidity levels. Adsorbing up to 40% of its weight in water vapor, Silica Gel performs best at room temperature (21-32°C) and high humidity of 60 – 90% RH (relative humidity). In an enclosed container, Silica Gel is able to bring the RH down to about 40%. Odorless and non-reactive to chemicals, it is one of the most commonly used desiccants to control moisture or humidity. Stream Peak offers both indicating and non-indicating Silica Gel, with the Blue Indicating Silica Gel which turns from blue to pink to visually alert the need for replacement, and the Orange Indicating Silica Gel which changes from orange to green. As for the non-indicating Silica Gel, it changes from clear or transparent white to a hazy or milky color when filled with moisture.
Many types of Silica Gel for example:
- Blue Indicating Silica Gel is suitable for use with the packing of electronic equipment and in applications with visual moisture controls.
- Orange Indicating Silica Gel is suitable for food and pharmaceutical applications.
- Clear silica gel is tasteless, odorless, non-reactive to chemicals, non-corrosive, and non-toxic. It is a safe moisture preventive agent.
- This mixture contains 90% Non-Indicating Silica Gel and 10% Blue Indicating Silica Gel.
- This mixture contains 90% Non-Indicating Silica Gel (white) and 10% Orange Indicating Silica Gel.

Since silica gel is non-toxic, odorless, and non-corrosive, it provides premium large volume desiccant dryers with lower energy costs. Compared to other desiccants, it has very stable thermal and chemical characteristics. This choice of desiccant is typically white and referred to as non-indicating. Once the gel absorbs the moisture, it will remain unchanged physically. For gel that is self-indicating, an additive is added to the basic gel so that it changes color upon the adsorption of water. A self-indicating silica gel allows for a visual indication of the level of activity that is taking place.
