Activated carbon is a charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The activated carbon has a massive surface area making it highly effective at adsorbing impurities from water.
Industrial and municipal waste water can contain many impurities, which are divided into different pollutant groups (among others dissolved and undissolved substances, easily degradable organic substances, persistent organic substances, plant nutrients, heavy metals, and salts). The aim of sewage treatment is the elimination of these undesired impurities and the restoration of natural water quality. The contaminations are usually pre-cleaned with other treatment processes such as flocculation, sedimentation and/or biological treatment. The activated carbon is usually used in a last processing step to remove the most difficult impurities like pharmaceutical micropollutants. When charcoal is heated up to 9000C, the pores in carbon compound (charcoal) start opening up, thus making the adsorbent capacity of the charcoal even stronger.
