It is used in oilfield completion and workover operations to reduce water activity and create osmotic forces to prevent absorption of water by shales. Calcium Chloride Prills used in gas and oil drilling helps to keep gases from forming and helps sludge from getting out of hand. The divalent calcium ion inhibits clay swelling, dispersion, and migration.

For fluoride removal:- Industrial operations, such as petroleum refineries, aluminum smelters, and semiconductor production facilities, generate effluents that are high in fluoride content and require treatment prior to their discharge into public streams. Calcium chloride can be used effectively in the removal of fluoride.
For Gas Drying:- Refineries and petrochemical plants requiring a method to remove dissolved and free water from hydrocarbon streams utilize the calcium chloride pellets that significantly remove the moisture.
